Feature Mapping is a Product Evangelism tool. Product Evangelism is helping people imagine the future and inspiring them to help create that feature.
Product is only a means to achieve Product Vision. It’s the people who work towards vision at the end of the day. The Product should help people in doing whatever is required to achieve Product Vision. Feature Mapping helps you identify that connection. Feature Map helps you map the vision to activities that people have to do to achieve it and constraints that people are facing to perform those activities. One can identify the Product features by trying to identify ways and means to address those constraints. Here is how feature mapping works.
Let’s say you want to build a product with a vision to reduce traffic on the road by reducing private cars on Bangalore road. One node of feature map may look like below:
Feature Mapping helps you identify the gaps with available alternatives to achieve the goal and create a Value Hypothesis to run experiments to find out Problem/Solution fit. It helps you stay in the problem space by stimulates your thinking to first identify the problem and helps you find an appropriate solution.
Here is an example of feature map created using leanGears.
